The Plastering Process Step by Step
Prep & Protect
Clear the room, cover floors, remove or protect radiators and skirting. Strip wallpaper and treat damp.
Bonding
PVA coat porous surfaces, apply bonding coat to bare brick, or dot-and-dab plasterboard to damaged walls.
Backing Coat
Apply browning or bonding coat for thick build-ups. Level and rule flat. For skims, this step is skipped.
Skim Coat
Apply 2–3mm finishing plaster, trowel smooth, polish as it sets. This is the skilled finish that shows through paint.
Drying & Handover
Allow 3–6 days to dry. Plasterer returns to touch up any shrinkage cracks. Ready for mist coat and decoration.

4 Mistakes to Avoid
Painting Before It's Dry
Painting wet plaster traps moisture, causing bubbles, peeling and patchy colour. Wait until the plaster is uniformly pale pink (3–6 days) and use a mist coat of watered-down emulsion first.
Ignoring Asbestos in Old Artex
Artex ceilings installed before 2000 may contain asbestos. Never scrape or drill without testing. A skim-over is safe; removal requires a licensed contractor.
Underestimating Prep
Loose plaster, bare brick and damp patches need bonding coats or boarding. Skipping prep means the new skim cracks and falls off within months.
Choosing the Cheapest Quote
Plastering is a skilled trade. A cheap, rushed job leaves trowel marks, ridges and uneven finishes that show through paint. Always see previous work and check reviews.

Do I need to prepare walls before plastering?
Remove old wallpaper, loose plaster and dust. PVA-coat bare plasterboard or very porous walls. The plasterer will advise, but clearing the room and removing radiators/skirting saves time and cost.
What's the difference between skimming and plastering?
Skimming is a thin (2–3mm) top coat over existing plaster or board. Plastering includes backing coats (bonding, browning) for thicker build-ups on bare walls. Skimming is cheaper; full plastering is needed for damaged or bare brickwork.
