Design & Survey
Garden designer surveys the site, soil, aspect and levels. Presents a design, planting plan and quote.
Groundworks
Excavate, level, install drainage if needed, lay sub-base for hard landscaping, prepare beds for planting.
Hard Landscaping
Lay patio, decking, paths, walls and fencing. Build structures (pergola, shed). This is the bulk of the cost.
Soft Landscaping
Lay turf or seed, plant shrubs and trees, mulch beds. Best done in spring or autumn.
Finish & Handover
Install lighting and water features, final clean, handover with a maintenance plan for the planting.
Common Mistakes
If the only access is through the house, all materials go through in wheelbarrows and waste comes out the same way. This adds 30–50% to labour. Plan access and disposal before quoting.
Patios and decking on unprepared ground sink, crack and collect puddles. A 100–150mm sub-base with membrane is essential. Skipping it halves the lifespan of the hard landscaping.
Beautiful plants die in the wrong soil or aspect. Test soil pH and observe sun/shade before planting. A planting plan suited to your garden's conditions saves thousands in replacements.
A high-maintenance garden (lawns, hedges, ponds) costs £500–£1,500/year to maintain. If you want a low-maintenance garden, choose gravel, evergreen planting and composite materials from the start.
