Common Mistakes
Any gas work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Ask to see their ID card. Unregistered work is illegal, invalidates warranties and is dangerous.
A bigger boiler isn't better. An oversized combi short-cycles, wastes gas and wears out faster. Size it to your radiators and hot water demand, not headroom.
Fitting a new boiler to a dirty system clogs the heat exchanger within months and voids the warranty. Always flush if the system is old.
A smart thermostat (Nest, Hive, Tado) saves 10–15% on heating bills and lets you zone your system. Add it for £150–£300 — it pays back within 2–3 years.
FAQs
A new combi boiler fitted costs £2,000–£3,500 in 2026. A system or regular boiler costs £2,300–£4,200. Adding a full set of new radiators brings the total to £3,500–£5,500. A complete central heating system costs £4,500–£8,000.
A like-for-like combi swap takes 1 day. Converting from a system/regular boiler to a combi (removing tanks, repositioning pipework) takes 2–3 days. A full central heating system with all new radiators takes 3–5 days.
Worcester Bosch, Vaillant and Viessmann consistently top reliability surveys. Ideal and Baxi are good mid-range options. Always choose a brand with a 7–10 year warranty and use a Gas Safe registered installer.
If your existing radiators are old or the system water is dirty, a power flush (£350–£600) protects the new boiler's heat exchanger and validates the warranty. Many installers include it; some charge extra.
A single radiator supplied and fitted costs £200–£450 depending on size and style. Designer or column radiators cost more. Replacing 8 radiators costs £1,600–£3,600 fitted including TRVs.
Combi boilers are ideal for 1–2 bathroom homes — they heat hot water on demand with no tank, saving space. System boilers suit larger homes with 2+ bathrooms that need simultaneous hot water. A heating engineer can advise based on your hot water demand.
