Surface
Lay the chosen surface (tarmac, blocks, resin, concrete, gravel). Lay to falls so water drains.
Finish & Cure

Skipping the Sub-Base
A driveway is only as good as its sub-base. Skimping on excavation and mot type 1 causes sinking, cracking and puddles within years. A 150mm sub-base is the minimum for vehicular use.
Ignoring Drainage
Surface water must drain somewhere. Non-porous surfaces over 5m² need planning permission and a drainage solution (Aco drains, soakaway). Poor drainage causes flooding and undermines the drive.
Block Paving Without Weed Membrane
Block paving without a geo-textile membrane grows weeds within months. A membrane plus kiln-dried jointing sand and annual resealing keeps it weed-free.
Choosing on Price Alone
Cheap quotes often skip excavation, use thin sub-bases or inferior materials. Compare quotes on specification (depth, materials, edging, drainage), not just price. A drive that fails costs twice.
